. back to you. >> thank you. >>> a developing story. bay area commuters, you have a big reprieve. golden gate ferry service boats going to run on schedule today. anne makovec in larkspur. marin county with why the strike has suddenly been called off. she has more. good morning. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with the union spokesman who says, they were thinking about striking so they wanted to let the public know that they were thinking about striking so the public wasn't surprised. then the golden gate bridge district decided to go ahead and call off the service because they didn't want people to be surprised either. so there is confusion between the union and the district, no surprise. we heard of these contract negotiations getting out of control before. in this case it was going to end up in a one-day strike here for golden gate ferry service between larkspur where i'm standing, san francisco, and sausalito all ferry service was going to be cancelled for the day. this morning it turns out that workers showed up for work. so there will be no disruption in service today. certain
the rivers fast, swollen and as we saw, very dangerous. >> a big increase in the stock market yesterday. the dow jones industrial average soared 180 points. it will open at 12,582. for the week the dow gained 648 points, that's nearly a 5 1/2% jump. the nasdaq also saw a big jump of 42 points and the s & p. 500 rose 14. >> for school the news is not good. they are recommending a ten percent increase in twotition from the board of regents. it would make up the loss in the budgets. the in state tuition would rise by more a thousand dollars to $12,200 a year. >>> imagine spending only a few dollars to help send a bay area student to college. it's possible through a new website called scholar match. students in financial need post their profile hoping to get people to donate money toward their college twotition. here is how it works. >> college is an expensive proposition but san francisco's scholarmatch.org is helping some students pay for their education. >> it began here at this tutoring center. men students were being accepted into college but didn't have a way to pay for it. >> the exe

. a big week all the way around. let's start with the case. these arrests could mean the common raise of giovanni ramirez. he was arrested in may. l.a.'s police chief at the time said very emphatically this was the man who beat stow. so l.a.'s mayor's office tells the l.a. times they are obviously going to need an explanation. now an anonymous police source say two people have been arrested. >> we were just waiting, kind of like everybody else. we know they have a big job to do and a lot of work ahead of them. we are putting all our faith in the lapd right now. >> this wouldn't mean ramirez would go free. he is serving time for a parole violation. this is a good example of why people shouldn't rush to judgment. we don't know what led them to these two people. we are hoping we will learn more today. as for stow's progress, according to his family's blog he has made a breakthrough and he opened his eyes and closed them on demand. when they asked him what his last name was, he mouthed the word stow. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, "abc 7 news." >>> residents in one san francisco n
. the roof started burning at 11:10 at alcatraz and king streets. it was an enormous fire. big flames coming out of that roof. it's too early to stay whether fireworks were to blame. check out these images from over in brentwood, two homes caught fire. firefighters think it was the barbecue grill, no one was hurt. the victims from one of homes had only been there about three weeks had just moved in. they had unfortunately been through this before. >> very scary. we were able to get out in time. we know the neighbors were able to help us. it was a second fire we've had. so it burned down and the fire department responded really fast >> reporter: just incredible. now check out what they were dealing with out in the county. east contra costa county, lots of grass fires, half a dozen. the skies lit up with illegal fireworks so a lot of them on the ground there were a lost fires. this is in bay point. no injuries were reported from these fires and no structures were burned but again, firefighters say it's too early whether fireworks was to blame but it would be quite a coincidence that it just ha
